Relatives of the late Mahendra Seenarine, who was reportedly found hanging in the La Grange Police Station lockups on Tuesday last, say they are convinced that the man was beaten to death.
The man left his home, escorted by police ranks, on Tuesday afternoon, but relatives say only yesterday his remains were seen by his wife.
The grieving wife of Mahendra Seenarine being consoled by relatives yesterday at the funeral service.
According to Seenarine’s wife, Salima Dilchand, she was told that she would not be allowed to witness her husband’s post mortem, which was done on Friday.
Instead, the dead man’s sister was allowed only to identify the body before the post mortem was conducted, and then, she claims, she was ordered out of the room.
Following the post mortem, Salima said, her sister was told that Seenarine had died of strangulation.
Meanwhile, yesterday, after the coffin bearing the remains of Seenarine arrived at his Canal Number One home, there was loud wailing by relatives.
As relatives began viewing his remains, they noticed several wounds and swelling to his head. As such, they concluded that he was beaten.
The dead man’s wife said that when her husband left their home on Tuesday, there were no wounds to his head. As such, the relatives are calling on the relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation, since they believe that he was beaten at the La Grange Police Station.
The wife said that, initially, she was told that her husband had hung himself with his pants and shirt while in the lock-ups. However, she questioned how is it possible for someone to hang themselves with a three-quarters denim pants and a T-shirt.
On Tuesday last, Seenarine was arrested by police ranks from the La Grange Police Station after neighbours reported that he was beating his son.
The man was arrested at some time around 17:30 hours, and his relatives were informed just before midnight that he had hung himself.
