PALMYRA, BERBICE — A further $880 million was allocated for the Access Road to the Berbice River Bridge in this year’s National Budget.
This, according to Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, would make a big difference in the completion of the project. Among work left to be done on the eastern side is the paving of some sections of the roadway, and erecting signs and road lights at strategic spots.
The Regional Chairman indicated that more vehicles are using the bridge now since the go-ahead was given for vehicles weighing up to five tones to use the bridge.
The new date of completion for the Berbice River Bridge Access Road is now during the first week of April.
The project is being executed by DIPCON. Work began on the eastern side of the bridge at the end of 2006. The Berbice River Bridge Access Road is 1.6 kilometres long, and stretches from Crab Island to Palmyra Village.
It is funded by the Government of Guyana with support of a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank. The executing agency is the Ministry of Public Works and Communication Work Service Group.
