-Next stop is St. Joseph’s High
In keeping with the stated mission of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) which mandated clubs to assist in broadening the pool of players at the junior level, Old Fort Hockey Club started that journey with a visit last Friday to the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School.
There members of the club conducted basic drills with students of the school in an effort to get students to become involved in the sport.
The club which recently installed a new executive will next conduct sessions at the St. Joseph’s High School on Thursday.
President of the club Ivor Thompson in an invited comment said that in addition to conducting sessions with potential hockey players, the club also aims to resuscitate a basketball arm as well.
“Apart from attempting to increase the players’ pool in hockey, we also see an urgent need to provide additional recreational activities for the youths which can help to keep them away from harmful activities such as drug abuse and teenage pregnancy,” Thompson related.
He disclosed that the new executive has committed to providing more opportunities for the youths, especially those that reside in Georgetown and its immediate environs.
The club kicks off its first fund raising activity on February 23, Mashramani Day by having a Food and Beverage Stall on the Merriman’s Mall closer to Vlissingen Road.
Meanwhile, President of the GHB Phillip Fernandes in a Meeting with representatives of affiliated clubs recently urged them to start working in schools which is usually regarded as the entry base for recruiting players to the sport.
He added that the GHB intends to run an entry level workshop for interested persons to create a crop of coaches that can begin work in the schools. “Clubs are going to be advised to begin their discussions with schools to get their programmes moving rather than await the workshop,” he said.
