Dear Editor,
Time and time again I have heard that one of the best things to do is to neuter/spay your pet. I have also heard that it is done by a simple surgery and that these animals live normal and healthier lives.
I thought long and hard and then finally decided to have my pets neutered and spayed. I decided to have my pet dog ‘Tang’ neutered first.
So on Friday 16th Jan 2009, I said goodbye to my beloved pet and even made a joke with him. He was taken to the GSPCA to have the surgery done by the vet who works there.
What happened after has left me so indescribably upset I can’t begin to explain. My pet came home from the clinic the very afternoon under heavy sedation. I was told that by the next morning everything would be more or less normal. I subsequently made him as comfortable as possible for the night. I checked on him twice during the night, the last time being about 12:30 pm. He was still sedated.
Imagine my horror therefore when I awoke at about 6 am on Saturday and found that my beloved Tang didn’t survive the night. I was so shocked and confused.
When I finally got control of my grief I decided that I should have a post mortem done to find out if he was suffering from any illness that I wasn’t aware of. To my dismay the results showed that my pet died from internal hemorrhaging because the sutures somehow came loose or more to the point disappeared since the vet couldn’t even find it. How could this be possible?
How can a qualified veterinarian not make sure that the sutures were properly secured Is this a case quantity over quality of work done or just gross negligence?
I am at a loss for words. I know for a fact that this decision I made will remain with me for a very long time.
I am therefore pleading with all pet owners, if you love your pets as much as I loved mine do whatever it takes to protect them.
Remember your pet may be very loved and adored by you but for some of the people entrusted to take care of them they are just things.
