Yesterday’s upsetting calamity that occurred at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua should serve as a wake up call for all the territories that built stadiums for the last Cricket World Cup, but who’ve have since failed to complete outstanding infrastructural works.
With Guyana gearing up to host two one-day matches at the National Stadium in Providence next month, there is an urgent need for the very spacious car park situated on the northern side of the ground to be asphalted so that patrons do not have to endure the discomfort of walking through the slush of clay if it rains.
During the last World Cup, cricket fans that drove vehicles and had to utilise the car park, had to negotiate the treacherous slippery conditions to get out of the facility, before proceeding to enter the stadium.
Many complained bitterly about the sodden state underfoot when the rain fell and it was indeed sad when just nearby the stadium which reputedly has about the best drainage system for any cricket ground in the world.
It is in stark contrast to the stadium that is so well done and usually provides a wonderful atmosphere for cricket.
The relevant authorities must not wait until the last minute to rectify this situation and be seen hustling to put things in place on the morning of the match.
Antigua’s regretful development must have provided the wake up call for all to conclude preparations early and not face similar shame.
Every international tour must be viewed as an avenue to market our country and even though our hospitality is unquestionable, there are a few other important elements in tourism that we sometimes fail to implement.
English cricket fans travel all over the world to support their team and it would not be surprising to see many of them who were here before return to witness the two one-dayers so those spearheading the preparations for this segment of the tour must understand the necessity to make every aspect of the trip enjoyable to all.
Remember, if those who were here decide to measure the level of development since then to now, they must arrive at a positive mark on the index.
Let us start early and do a very good job.
