The body of Dr Joshua Ramsammy, who died on Wednesday, will be cremated today at the Good Hope Crematorium.
Close associates say that the body will be at his Ogle residence from 10:00 to 12:00 hours for a service, then it will be taken to the Good Hope Crematorium, East Coast Demerara, for a 13:00 hour cremation.
The Office of the Pro-Chancellor and the University community are saddened at the passing of Dr. Ramsammy, a former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana from 1999-2002, a statement read.
“Dr. Ramsammy, an Aquatic Biologist, also was a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Biology teaching staff at the University of Guyana.
“Dr. Ramsammy was a member of the Guyana Peace Council, Ratoon, and the Movement Against Oppression (MAO). He was a passionate and indefatigable fighter in the struggle against the People’s National Congress (PNC) dictatorship.
He survived an attempted assassination on October 4, 1971, and received emergency surgery,” the statement added.
It added that Dr Ramsammy’s passing will be a tremendous loss to academia. “The University of Guyana is the poorer for this loss, as he provided yeoman service to this institution for most of his life.
“The Office of the Pro-Chancellor and the University community would like to extend condolences to the family, friends, and well wishers of the late Dr. Joshua Ramsammy.”
