Dear Editor,
The abandonment of play on the first day of the Second Test in Antigua is a massive embarrassment, not only for Antigua but for all of us who rally round the West Indies.
The events at Sabina Park a few years ago should have prompted every other regional venue to pledge that no similar embarrassment would visit its shores.
Sadly, Antigua did not seem to take note and the television pictures beamed around the world tell another story of West Indian underdevelopment. My concern here is our level of preparation.
Guyana has had its share of criticism too. With the knowledge that we are the most vulnerable to rainfall, we seemed to have been caught under-prepared when the rest of the cricketing world watched as the sponges and towels were being manually applied at Bourda in the face of ponds of water. Again and again, rain, no play.
That type of embarrassment seems to be behind us as the new Stadium has demonstrated that it has the capacity to absorb water faster and more effectively than any other arena. Good!
But what about the other aspects of our national Stadium?
Couldn’t something, for example, be done about the state of the car park? Could the management of the Stadium not have it asphalted for both the practical and aesthetic reasons. Someone must take a hard critical look to ensure that no aspect of the operations falls below accepted international standards.
The simple point is: we want to be assured and re-assured that there is a checklist somewhere and that there is someone going through it, item by item, to ensure that Guyana passes with flying colours when the tourists arrive here.
By the way, the checklist must extend beyond the Stadium and beyond the facilities for cricket. It must contain all those elements required of an effective tourist destination.
Yours sincerely
Mark
