The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) will open its season this Sunday, February 15, with a 20-lap event around the inner circuit of the National Park.
According to the organizer, Michael David Kirton, the walk is also in commemoration of Guyana’s 39th Republic Anniversary. He said that the cream of the country’s race walkers would face the starter’s gun.
Top race walker, Rudolph Mitchell, with an unbeaten spell of 84 races, would be hard-pressed to retain the dominant spell of last year. He would have to face the young up and coming star, Jonathon Fagundes who has recently shown remarkable improvement.
Two other walkers to watch are O’Neil Joseph and Jeremy Cornelius.
When these competitors faced the starter’s line in October last, Mitchell had to pull out all the stops to emerge victorious. In the end, he barely came in first, before Joseph, 2nd and Cornelius, 3rd.
Veterans Debidyal Harold and Maurice Fagundes would also attempt to avenge a defeat by Brian Roberts, who out-walked them in the Amerindian Heritage race walk last year, while female race walker Donna Ramkissoon will attempt to continue her winning ways.
Kirton also disclosed that this Sunday’s race would attract participants from all ten administrative regions who will compete in several categories; seniors, juniors and veterans.
Interested participants are urged to be at the starting point at around 05:30 for registration and a prompt start. Step off time is 06:30 hrs, sharp.
