Feb 13, 2009 Letters
Dear Editor,
I was fortunate to have met Mr. Don Gomes on Saturday, February 7, 2009 in the Metro Xerox Department.
I did seek permission to ask a few questions, which was granted, and the individual was very civil and humorous; and there is indeed quite a lot to learn from him, for he struck me as someone who is very knowledgeable on a lot of topics, and I am always open to learn from others.
Mr. Gomes has a great lot of respect for the present US Administration, like many of us. And having been curious about the objective of the recent Georgetown Road March, which was organised by him in commemoration of the recent US Presidential Inauguration, I was fed with a satisfactory answer.
However, his answer towards the final question was a bit puzzling, which I will share with readers; and it would also be interesting to learn from others what their opinions are on it.
That is, if time is available. He mentioned that the US will some day/soon, totally stand on its own by not needing any oil from the Arab World and Venezuela.
I choose not to agree with him on it, for I strongly believe that, to a large extent, the US survival solely depends on the support and oil from the Arab World and Venezuela, to some extent.
The US would become nothing should relations be spoilt with the oil rich nations which are good business friends, especially Saudi Arabia. Is that a balanced assumption?
T. Pemberton
