Another serving member of the Guyana Police Force has been charged with demanding money by menace. Bertie Griffith, a rank attached at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, allegedly demanded two pairs of gold ear-rings valued $20,000 and US$100 from Vishal Singh on December 14, 2008.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate, Melissa Robertson.
However, Singh, who was present in court, told the presiding magistrate that Griffith never demanded the items from him. When cautioned by Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith that “bearing false witness” could lead to his prosecution, the man quickly changed his story. Singh then told the court that he did not wish to offer any evidence against Griffith.
The policeman was then ordered to pay $20,000 court cost and to sign a bond to keep the peace for two years.
Over the past three days nine serving members of the Guyana Police Force have been charged with demanding money with menace. On Monday Brian De Mendonca was charged for demanding money using menace. The policeman allegedly demanded $70,000 from Randy Samuels.
On Tuesday other serving members of the Guyana Police Force were also charged and remanded to prison.
A further charge stated that the policemen with the intent to steal demanded the sum of $500,000 for protecting Gavin Shepherd, in order that he may avoid prosecution for the offence of trafficking in narcotics.
On Wednesday two more were charged with demanding money using public menace.
Constable Bryan Peters and Corporal Robert Semple are accused of demanding money from Lindomar DeBarros, while attached to the Sherima Police Station, Essequibo, on May 6, 2008.
