Fire believed to be of electrical origin completely destroyed a two-flat house at 119 Hope West, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, leaving six persons homeless.
The blaze which started at about 14:40 hours completely engulfed the building and within 15 minutes the occupants lost everything except for the clothes they had on at the time. The fire started in the upper flat of the building, unbeknownst to the occupants who were downstairs.
Eyewitnesses said that they saw sparks coming from the main electrical wire leading to the house but by the time they could mobilize help, the flames had consumed the property which was recently repainted.
Whodeonaraine Ramnarine, an occupant of the house who is visiting Guyana on holiday, told this newspaper that he was at a neighbour when some friends came and told him that his house was on fire.
“I run and come but the fire was already big,” Ramnarine said.
He said that he is thankful that no one was injured.
His son Hemraj Ramnarine who lives in the house with his wife, three children and his 93-year-old mother-in-law related that he was at a nearby snackette when the alarm was raised.
He said that some men carrying out construction work nearby first observed the fire in the upper flat of the building.
“By the time I reach, I couldn’t go upstairs fuh nothing because the flame was heavy,” he said.
The GuySuCo Enmore Estate fire tender arrived at the scene first and was subsequently backed up by another from the city.
But even that could not save the house.
When this newspaper visited the scene, the distraught occupants were busy combing through the debris with the hope of recovering some of their jewellery and other prized possessions. Unfortunately, the house was uninsured.
