– Regional officials support residents’ claim, police deny
Over the past few weeks Bartica has been plagued by a series of armed robberies which are causing some discomfort to residents even as they prepare to celebrate the first anniversary of the massacre.
As recent as Monday night a robbery was foiled after a resident who might have been the target alerted the police.
According to residents, within the past week there have been five reported cases of armed robberies in the former mining community.
When contacted on the issue, the officer in charge at the Bartica Police Station denied that there was an upsurge in armed robberies in the community.
Regional Executive Officer, Peter Ramotar said there has been an upsurge and it is of great concern to himself and residents.
“I don’t know what scale they (the police) use to measure the upsurge of criminal activities but almost every night someone is being attacked and even in broad day light,” the REO said.
According to Ramotar, this upsurge is causing much fear in residents despite the fact that they are preparing for the anniversary of the massacre.
“I think more needs to be done…I met with the officers recently and they indicated that the situation was under control,” the REO added.
He said too that he is of the opinion that persons are capitalizing on what transpired last year and using this time to drive fear into people and at the same time get what they can.
Also expressing similar sentiments was Regional Chairman Holbert Knights. According to Knights, having received complaints from residents it seems as if little or nothing was being done.
He said that he was forced to speak to the Force’s Administration about the issue.
As such several senior detectives from the city were sent to Bartica to do some work.
Up to yesterday the detectives were still in Bartica.
Meanwhile, residents continue to express fear.
They say that persons are fearful of leaving their home and even being on the road late at nights.
“Businesses are closing up early; people don’t even lime late on the road now because we are fearful,” one resident said.
Another resident said that their fellow Barticians are involved and are assisted by outsiders.
“Whoever are the persons doing these robberies they have good information because only persons believed to have money are being targeted. Outsiders are being given assistance by people living right here,” the resident said.
