A man who presented himself as a “man of God” had been humbled and made to spend his time with the prisoners in the Camp Street jail until he is required to return to court for a case against him.
In fact, he will be spending a long time before his trial.
Yesterday, he was remanded to prison after he made his court appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that Lay Pastor Colin Caesar, on February 7 last, had in his possession 273 grams of cannabis for the sole purpose of trafficking in narcotics. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
At the time, he was visiting the prisons to teach music to the prisoners there.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Jonas Coddett, who, in an unsuccessful bail application, told the court that his client has an unblemished record.
The lawyer explained that Caesar was held by the prison authorities and was taken to a room, where he was searched. Coddett further told the court that he does hope that the police have a camera or pictures showing when they took the drugs out of Caesar’s pockets and crotch.
The lawyer therefore asked that bail be granted at a reasonable sum, since the charge is a bailable one.
However, bail was opposed by police prosecutor Desiree Fowler, who told the court that the pastor had been under surveillance for some time by the prison authorities.
She further told the court that, on the day in question, the prison ranks received information that the pastor would have the drugs on him when he entered the prison.
After arriving at the Georgetown Prison to conduct his usual “music lessons,” a search was carried out on his person.
The prosecutor explained that the drugs were unearthed in the man’s pockets and pants crotch. He was immediately arrested and charged with the present offence.
Bail was denied, and the accused is expected to make his next court appearance on May 6.
The pastor was handed over to police a few hours after he was caught allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana and cell phones into the Georgetown Prison.
The pastor, who teaches inmates music, was detained by prison officials with five packets of marijuana, three cellular phones and a quantity of cash.
The incident occurred at about 21:45 hours on the day in question.
