in La Jalousie murder trial
Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos yesterday pointed out discrepancies in the evidence given by a witness, Chetram, in the Magistrates’ Court and the evidence given in the High Court as the trial into the murder of Mahadeo Singh, called Shanta Ram continued.
On trial is Rambarran Singh, who is accused of stabbing Mahadeo Singh, his eldest brother, to death at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara on March 22, 2005.
The matter is being heard by Justice Brassington Reynolds and a 12-memebr jury in the Supreme Court.
Chetram, under cross-examination yesterday, said that he told the relatives of the deceased that he saw “everything.” According to him, he saw the accused stab the deceased.
He also said that between 3:30 pm on March 22, 2005 and 4:30pm on March 23, 2005 he had spoken to the relatives of the deceased. However, DeSantos pointed out that, in his evidence-in-chief given in the Magistrates’ Court, he had said that between the relevant times he had said nothing to the relatives.
Also, he had said in the Magistrates Court that he was between 25 and 35 rods away from the scene of the crime, but yesterday he said that he was eight to 10 rods away.
DeSantos suggested to him that he saw nothing and that he made the entire story up. Chetram’s response was “No, I see everything.”
The prosecution is contending that bad relationship over a property led to Rambarran Singh stabbing his eldest brother, Mahadeo Singh, also called Shanta Ram, to death, at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara on March 22, 2005.
The accused allegedly stabbed the victim 21 times. The matter is being prosecuted by special state prosecutor Jailall Kissoon.
The matter will continue today.
