By Franklin Wilson
The incumbent Peter Green was returned unopposed as President of the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation (GAPLF) when the body held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday in the Hibiscus Room at the Tower International Hotel.
The new Executive Committee of the GAPLF. President Peter Green (seated centre) is flanked by Secretary Gordon Spencer (left) and Treasurer, Monty Livan. Standing from left, Ron Loncke, Andrew Austin, Winston Stoby, Mark Seymour and Wendell McPherson.
Green, in his second one-year term at the helm, challenged his executive to work alongside and not behind him in charting a new and exciting course for the sport and athletes.
Among the immediate challenges he said is the hosting of the Caribbean Championships next year and securing sponsors to run off the three major local championships (Novices, Intermediate & Seniors).
Green highlighted the fact that Guyana has received a number of invitations for overseas competitions and his Federation will be working assiduously to ensure representative teams attend because he is confident the local athletes can beat the competition.
He made special mention of Guyana’s return to the Caribbean Championships last year after an absence of 12 years and the performances of ‘Big’ John Edwards (4 gold) and Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses (2 silver & 2 bronze). “Their excellence”, he noted “has placed Guyana back on the Power Lifting map and made a positive impact on our being able win the bid to host the Caribbean Championships.”
The other members of the Executive are Andrew Austin (Vice President), Gordon Spencer (Secretary), Monty Livan (Treasurer), Ron Loncke (Public Relations Officer / Organising Secretary), Mark Seymour, Wendell McPherson and Winston Stoby (Committee Members).
Green presented his vision that would shape a successful future for the body to the AGM in the form of a 5-year plan, 2008 – 2012. He also encouraged his team to work on modernising the current constitution.
A provisional calendar of events for 2009 – 2010 was also tabled. This document makes provision for training of coaches, referees and technical staff. Clinics on banned substances as documented by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) will also be held apart from a number of fund raising activities.
This year according to Green, will see the revival of a series of Bench Press competitions. Among the overseas competitions Guyana is expected to attend; the number of athletes depending on the level of funds are the 3rd Annual Caribbean Power Lifting and Bench Press Championships to be held in the United States Virgin Islands May 14-16, 7th NAPF Congress, North American & 12th South American / Pan American Championships (August 3-8, Guatemala), World Sub Juniors and Juniors Championships (August 31 – September 6, Brazil) and possibly the Commonwealth Championships slated for India, December 9-13. The first executive meeting is expected to be held sometime next week.
