Skipper Travis Dowlin (87) and Royston Crandon (67) hit first innings half-centuries, while an elegant 65 from Leon Johnson failed to prevent Guyana from crashing to their fourth consecutive defeat on the third day of their fifth round WICB regional four-day cricket match at the Windwards ground against Barbados which ended here yesterday.
Following-on, needing 207 to avoid an innings defeat, Guyana were shot out for 148 despite an elegant second innings 65 from Leon Johnson.
Dowlin and Royston Crandon added 132 for the fifth wicket and Christian chipped in with 47 as Guyana, replying to Barbados’ 495-8 declared, were dismissed for 288 in their first innings with the injured Veerasammy Permaul being unable to bat.
Guyana slipped to 16-2 in their second innings and then lost two crucial wickets in the space of two runs to wobble to 78-4 before Royston Crandon was forced to retire hurt three runs later as he played no shot to a short ball which cut back from Kemar Roach and was struck on his elbow before he had scored.
Johnson, with an array of scintillating drives and commanding pulls then showed why he was elevated to the West Indies team without a First-Class ton to his name.
However, the 21-year-old left-hander will need to start making three figure scores if he hopes to return to the West Indies side ahead of some of the other contenders vying for places on the regional team.
Guyana return home tomorrow with just four points and with their next game starting on Friday at home, the new selection panel will have to take many things into consideration when they sit to pick the team for the next encounter at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
Guyana resumed the penultimate day on 166-4, needing to get 345 to avoid the follow-on, and in glorious sunshine, the overnight pair of Dowlin and Crandon were soon separated on a track which was still good for batting.
Crandon steered Roach to wide third man for four while Dowlin picked up his third fifty for the season with an immaculate cover driven boundary from 118 balls, 164 minutes with four fours and a six and celebrated with an elegant on-side four off the next ball.
Watched by a good size crowd, the Guyana fifth wicket pair, both with three half-centuries each this season, buckled down to the task of getting their country back into the game and getting individual three-figure scores after joining forces at 57-4 on the second afternoon.
Crandon passed his previous best first-class score of 67 but with the introduction of left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds to replace Pedro Collins after just two overs, Crandon was taken at slip to break the fighting partnership 22 minutes into the day’s play to leave Guyana on 189-5.
The 25-year-old Crandon again failed to convert his fifty into a big score after batting for 150 minutes, 126 balls and hitting seven fours and two sixes and his demise left a lot of work on the shoulders of Dowlin, the team’s most experienced batsman.
Christian, who scored 52 against CCC in their second match, joined his Skipper and DCC teammate as Collins was switched to the Southern end in windy conditions.
Dowlin, who has been playing at this level since 1997 when he made his debut in Grenada, steered Collins along the ground through the slip cordon for his sixth boundary and continued to look rock solid.
Christian caressed the former West Indies left-arm pacer beautifully off the front foot through cover for a boundary as he provided good support to the well entrenched Dowlin.
Just before lunch, debutant leg-spinner Nikolai Charles struck a massive body blow to the Guyanese when he seemed fortunate to have Dowlin leg before, 13 short of his fifth hundred at this level.
His 87 lasted 211 balls, 267 minutes and included seven fours and two sixes and his departure left the visitors on 225-6.
Esuan Crandon (2*) and Christian who batted resolutely for 98 minutes and 68 balls to be unbeaten on 12 by lunch, saw Guyana to 227-6 by the interval.
Charles should have had his second first-class victim when Boucher at mid-off floored Christian on 13 at 228-6. Christian responded with a six and three fours in the over as Charles continued to be expensive.
A classy off-driven boundary off Collins by Christian brought up the Guyana 250 as the Guyanese wicketkeeper, who displayed wonderful common sense yesterday, blossomed as his innings progressed.
When just three short of his second fifty for the season, Christian, after pulling Charles ‘miles’ out of the ground over mid wicket, pulled the next ball to Roach on the mid-wicket boundary. His 47 lasted 98 balls, 137 minutes with five fours and two sixes,
Crandon (22) was then stupendously caught at short cover by Smith as he drove savagely at Hinds, who had him dropped at mid-on by Boucher a few balls before.
Brandon Bess joined Davendra Bishoo at 283-8 and after hitting Hinds for four was taken on the boundary next ball as Guyana’s innings closed at 13:33hrs.
Hinds, celebrated his re-call to the West Indies team with 3-35, while Collins took 2-44 and Charles 2-71 for Barbados who promptly enforced the follow-on.
Guyana began their second innings needing 207 to make Barbados bat again and quickly lost both openers as they struggled to 16-2.
Barnwell (2) top edged a pull off Roach for short-leg to catch running back to square-leg while Barrington, who again looked very compact, was removed by a spectacular catch at short mid-on by Haynes as he hit a bullet-like catch off Collins after making 9.
Barrington again failed to build on a good start but it seems only a matter of time before he gets a big score at this level. By tea Guyana were 32-2 with Johnson on 14 and Deonarine on two and the Bajans in charge in their own backyard.
After the break, Dowlin drilled a catch to Smith at cover off Hinds before he had scored, as the Guyanese slipped from 76-2 to 78-4 with Permaul and possibly Royston Crandon out of the game due to injury.
With the score on 76 and the third partnership worth 60, Deonarine (22) was run out by the length of the pitch as Johnson refused a call for a second run just when Deonarine was beginning to flow. Dowlin then departed at 78-4 while three runs later Royston Crandon was forced to retire.
Christian smashed Roach to the cover boundary while Johnson played an immaculate off-drive and drove Roach imperiously down the ground for consecutive boundaries to post the Guyana 100 in the 31st over of the innings.
Guyana continued to be positive with Christian sweeping Hinds for four before clobbering him to the point boundary two balls later as Guyana remained in the fight to save the game.
Collins then claimed his 200th regional first-class wicket when Christian, who smashed five fours in a cameo 28, touched a catch to the keeper to leave Guyana on 132-5.
Esuan Crandon (4) who never suggested permanence and was soon bowled by Collins at 146-6, while Johnson was bowled off the inside edge two runs later before Brandon Bess was leg before to Smith first ball as the match ended swiftly.
Smith ended with 3-29 while Collins took 3-27 for Barbados who took 12 points to move to 39 points.
