The Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) was transformed into a hive of frenzied activity as the boxers preparing for fistic action this month end at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, intensified their training.
Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes will face his sternest test to date when he opposes Lennox Alleyne in a 10 round middleweight scrap. He engaged in 10 rounds of furious action with veteran boxer, Clifford ‘Piggy’ Griffith and young prospects, Cecil Smith and Clyde Williams.
TURNING BACK THE HANDS OF TIME: Veteran boxer, Clifford ‘Piggy’ Griffith (left) engages a much younger Cecil Smith during sparring sessions yesterday morning.
He approached his training with commitment and determination that augers well for his engagement. Gilkes has since shelved the lunging style that has caused him many a fight and appears to be more focused and settled. Strong and compact, the middleweight fighter has vowed to use his power to overcome Alleyne. He said that he is working strenuously to whip himself into the desired shape for the fight.
Meanwhile, an earlier report in this newspapers that placed Gilkes in St Kitts for a one month training stint was corrected by Gilkes who said that he was not in St Kitts but in Trinidad and Tobago. He said that he had initially toyed with the St Kitts sojourn but after receiving a better proposition, decided to switch to the Twin Island Republic. He said that he had benefited immensely from the sojourn and is prepared to throw down the gauntlet with Alleyne.
Meanwhile, veteran boxer, Clifford ‘Piggy’ Griffith was also in full flow yesterday at the same training facility. He sparred a total of 4 rounds against Gilkes in preparation for his grudge match against Cecil ‘Koker Dawg’ Alfred. Griffith also went a further 2 rounds against Cecil Smith before engaging in shadow boxing activities for a further 6 rounds.
Williams sparred for 5 rounds against Gilkes and ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton before turning to the skipping rope for a 15 minutes session.
He is up against Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman in a ten round affair. Williams has also exuded confidence saying that despite Eastman’s international experience he (Williams) will overcome the hurdle.
Meanwhile, less than two miles away at the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym, Alfred was also hard at work. While Griffith opted for a session of strenuous activities, Alfred chose to hone his skills in the finer art of the sport. He spent some six rounds at the Forgotten youth Foundation (FYF), on the speed bag and rounded off his sessions with ten minutes of vigorous skipping.
The boxers are preparing for the first card of the year scheduled for this month end at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The card is promoted by Solomon’s Enterprise and also features Sharon Warde against Veronica Blackman in a return match. The last time the two squared off Warde had employed superb tactics to come out victorious. Blackman had promised a reverse in fortunes if the two should meet again. She now has the chance to make good on her boast.
Other fighters on show include Cecil Smith against Jermaine King over 4 rounds and Michael DeMattos squaring off with Eversley Brown in a 4 round middleweight affair. The boxers will continue training sessions at the ASLG and the FYD at 16:00hrs weekdays and 10:0hrs on Sundays.
Alleyne is currently training out of the USA and is scheduled to return to these shores soon. Kaieteur Sport will keep boxing buffs abreast of developments pertaining to the card as they unfold.
