The respective winners pose with their trophies following the conclusion of the Bounty Farm Ltd Handicap Tournament which ended last evening.
Caribbean Under-13 Squash champion Victoria Arjoon (+12) recovered from a set down to defeat giant killer David Fernandes (+12) 15/17, 15/12, 15/13 to capture the Open category as play in the Bounty Farm Ltd-sponsored Handicap Tournament ended last evening, at the Georgetown Club.
In the final, Arjoon, who was a straight sets winner over Mary-Fung-A-Fat in their semi-final clash opened up a little tentative and dropped the first set after Fernandes’ powerful returns found her struggling to retrieve.
However, she changed strategy in the second set and executed some beautiful forehand strokes interspersed with accurate drop volleys that took its toll on Fernandes as she managed to square the contest.
In the deciding stanza, Arjoon buoyed by her recovery continued the same strategy and even though Fernandes produced a gutsy performance, the Caribbean champ held on to capture the title.
Fernandes had beaten national Ladies champion Nicolette Fernandes in their semi-final encounter.
In the third place playoff, another Caribbean champion Mary Fung-A-Fat (+10) was pushed to the limit, before prevailing against world rated Nicolette Fernandes (-35) in a thriller.
The Caribbean champ kept her composure after losing the second set to hold off the fast charging Fernandes in the final set to take the match 15/12, 12/15, 15/1 in an impressive display.
In the ‘A’ category final, Lydia Fraser (0) held off a spirited challenge from young Nyron Joseph 15/11, 15/9 to capture the crown, while Randy Hope (-15) defeated Daniel Persaud (+12) 15/3, 15/3 for third place.
