A 15-year-old youth from Sophia on Wednesday last lost his left eye as a result of a brutal attack carried out by his estranged stepfather. At the Georgetown Public Hospital the visibly traumatised teen said that he would always be brutalised by his former stepfather for no particular reason.
He said that the issue had its genesis when his mother accidentally gave him “potatoes to cook”. It turned out that the potatoes belonged to the stepfather. The woman did not know that it belonged to the stepfather.
The teen, a third form student at the Sophia Special School, explained to Kaieteur News that Wednesday morning his mother gave him the potatoes.
The lad said that he came home around 3:30 and saw the man at the home. “I tell he good afternoon but he ain’t answer me.”
Another family friend who was at the hospital told Kaieteur News that the man was always in a habit of breaking the locks whenever the teen’s mother would change them.
The teen said that after the man saw that his potatoes were taken he immediately started beating him.
The teen said that his estranged stepfather ran for the hammer and dealt him a blow to the head and he fell to the ground.
He said that after he was lying on the ground the man came over him and used the opposite side of the hammer and clawed out his eye.
Neighbours heard the scuffling and screaming in the house and went to the lad’s rescue. An off duty police officer who lives in the area quickly arrested the assailant and called for back-up.
The man was taken to the Sophia Police Station whilst the injured lad was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he immediately underwent emergency surgery.
The teen is to undergo another reconstructive surgery today. The young lad admitted that his estranged step father had always been abusive to him while he shared a relationship with his mother. “I always had to be fighting back with him.”
The child’s mother told Kaieteur News that her son was supposed to be leaving for St. Lucia next week, but would have to change his plans and now adjust to his injury.
Kaieteur News understands that the step father would be charged today.
