Dear Editor,
In relation to the selection/appointment of a new Attorney General/Minister of Legal Affairs, it is very important that the President and his advisers select someone of national and international standing who is well versed in law (preferably a Senior Counsel) and is a person of the highest level of integrity with no known skeletons in the closet.
We have all looked with rapt attention to the confirmation process of President Obama’s nominees for various Cabinet positions and have seen some of them already being rejected or about to be rejected due to various transgressions such as non payment of tax or similar infractions.
Out of all the names being bandied around in the press Mr. Ralph Ramkarran stands out and I presume would face no major hurdle in the selection process were he interested. However, assuming he is appointed to this post then who would fill the speaker’s position which he currently holds and by all accounts has done an excellent job and not conducted himself in an overtly partisan manner like previous speakers.
I sincerely hope that with some common sense and divine intervention that the likes of Anil Nandlall and Charles Ramson are not catapulted into this very important post for reasons known to most Guyanese.
If Mr. Ralph Ramkarran is not chosen or declines, then I suggest one of the following lawyers since I believe they are competent, possess a high level of integrity and would not be unacceptable to the governing party:
1) Mr. Bayney Karran, currently Guyana’s Ambassador to the USA
2) Mr. Vidyanand Persaud, already mentioned as a possible candidate
3) Mr. Robin Stoby, Senior Counsel
4) Mr. Richard Fields, Senior Counsel
5) Mr. Moen Mcdoom, Senior Counsel; one of the fortunate few to be appointed Senior Counsel under the PPP tenure since 1992.
I wonder as to whether recently retired AG Mr. Doodnauth Singh has made any recommendation to the President or Cabinet as to a suitable replacement.
My fellow Guyanese, let your voice be heard on this issue and let’s have the most qualified individual fill this job.
