Police say ‘there were no strippers at Mahaica night club’

The Guyana Police Force in a press release in response to an article, “‘Strippers’ arrested after police raid Mahaica club,” in the Monday Edition of Kaieteur News, stated that there were no strippers at the event.

In the release, the police said that the promoter of the show had never applied for permission to host the event. They added that they moved to stop the event because they had heard that a ‘show and dance’ was to be held at the location in Belmont, Mahaica.

Since the requisite permissions had not been sought, the police stopped the event.
When the police arrived, the release said, two dancers, one male and one female, who were part of a dance troupe on the East Coast Demerara, were seen performing to a crowd of some 200 people. The police have said that both of the dancers were clad in ‘dancing apparel’.

The police have maintained that they did not observe any ‘stripping/strip tease’. According to the police, the promoter of the event was told that the show would have to be stopped, since he did not have permission to have the show.

After this, the promoter and the two dancers were taken into police custody and released on bail, after they were questioned at the Mahaica Police Station.

When the show closed, the release noted, the crowd of people left without problem.
The police have stressed that the show did not recommence after the arrested persons had been released.
The episode took place on Saturday night last, and the man identified as the club owner is expected to appear in court today.
