The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is offering $2M for information leading to the arrest of the killers of US citizen, Hubert Daniel Thompson, who was bludgeoned to death in his Le Meridien, Pegasus hotel room three years ago.
A statement from the US Embassy said that the FBI is working with the Guyana Police Force to investigate Thompson’s murder.
“Law enforcement authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in locating the unidentified suspect(s) believed to be responsible for Thompson’s death,” the statement said.
“The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 in United States dollars, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible….”
The statement urged persons with information on the identification or whereabouts of the unknown suspect(s) to contact the American Embassy at 225-1566.
On December 9, 2005, Thompson, a 55-year-old resident of Staunton, Virginia, was found dead in Room 616 at Le Meridien Pegasus.
An autopsy revealed that Thompson was struck at least 14 times at the back of the head with a blunt object.
He sustained a fractured skull and literally bled to death.
His room was ransacked but a briefcase containing over $3M was reportedly still there.
At the time of his demise, Thompson was on assignment for John Snow Incorporated (JSI), a research and training institute contracted by the United States Agency International Development (USAID).
Local investigators had revealed that a security guard had rapped at Thompson’s room after hearing strange noises coming from his room.
The security guard had reportedly told police that a man had appeared at the door, which still had the security chain attached. However, the man’s answers reportedly led the guard to conclude that nothing was amiss. However, internal security became suspicious after observing that the “please do not disturb” sign was still on the door the following evening.
When Thompson failed to answer several calls, security staffers broke into the room and found Thompson lying dead on a mattress that was on the floor.
According to local investigators, the Pegasus closed-circuit television cameras had captured Thompson entering the hotel on the day he was slain.
About four minutes later a man followed and went into Thompson’s room.
It is not clear when this individual left the room and the hotel, but observers said that they saw a man leaving the hotel with his cap pulled down in his face and carrying a black bag
Using video images of this man, operatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation developed a sketch of the individual.
Officials at the US Embassy here subsequently stated that an individual resembling this sketch was wanted for questioning in connection with Thompson’s murder.
Embassy officials appealed to persons with information about the suspect to contact the police, but no one ever did.
