Dear Editor,
On Monday, 26 January 2009, a motion calling for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the City of Georgetown was, once again, deferred on a request by the mover, Mr. Llewellyn John.
This latest deferral has caused some confusion in the minds of the citizens of Georgetown, since this action by the mover and councillors, not excluding the Mayor of Georgetown, did not send a clear signal as to whether or not these councillors are working in the interest of the citizens of Georgetown.
As a citizen of Georgetown, I support the call for elections of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, since it will provide an opportunity for new ideas, and at the same time bring renewed hope to citizens like myself, who would have already lost hope in City Hall delivering the type of services we are expecting. It can be clearly seen that, from all actions from the public, they have lost faith in the current Mayor of Georgetown, and Mr. Green has not come to the realization that, after 16 years, he is no longer Prime Minister. While accusing President Jagdeo and the PPP/C administration of dictatorship, he is guilty of the same crime, since, from time to time, he has been usurping the authority of the Town Clerk and other departmental heads, which has been contributing to the frustration of staff members, and the end result is the failure of the same staff members to perform their duties in accordance with Chapter 28:01 of the Laws of Guyana.
On the other hand, the seconder of the motion, Mr. Ranwell Jordan, who happens to be a member of the CEC of the PNCR and secretary of the disciplinary committee of the party, has been continuously debating the issue in the public domain while it is claimed by the party’s leader and general-secretary that the party has not taken a decision on the issue. Further, it is interesting to note that Messrs. Jordan and Green are members of the PNCR, and this public debate will definitely send mixed signals to the members and supporters of the PNCR.
It should be noted that Mr. Jordan was part of a disciplinary committee which meted out disciplinary actions to other party members for discussing party matters in the public.
I therefore call on the PNCR to state clearly its position on the issue of mayoral elections for Georgetown, and at the same time the Leader of the PNCR must give proper instructions to its councillors in the discharge of their functions at City Hall, which cost the citizens of Georgetown approximately $1.350 million per month as stipend for councillors.
