Dear Editor,
Having being a sports enthusiast for almost my entire life, I have said it in the past and will forever maintain my stance that Guyana has definitely got hidden talent in Track and Field and it’s only a matter of time before that acknowledgement is plastered globally from an Olympic Games.
I have to applaud Stabroek News for their report on the recent success of Olympians “Aliann Pompey” and “Marian Burnette” in the January 28/29, 2009 issues respectively. Aliann did well for my books and I could just imagine her full acceleration should a major global sponsor come on board with its full sponsorship. It will also be interesting to learn about the results from the 600 yards meet with the two friends.
To those upcoming potential Guyanese sports icons, I am fully aware that you are definitely at a major and great disadvantage coming from this end of the globe with training facilities and sponsorship, but should any opportunity arise for training elsewhere and possible adoption of another nation, grab it.
For me it’s no big deal whether one embraces the flag of another nation, but always remember to acknowledge your roots in someway or the other. Marion Jones did it well when she carried the flags of the US and Grenada (will double check on this) after one of her races.
We all have our desires or dreams and one of my personal desires is to grace my presence during an Olympic Games and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It would just be pure jubilation to cheer on the Guyanese sports ambassadors from the opening to the closing ceremonies and seeing that “Golden Arrowhead” live amongst other nations would be a moment of fist pumping for me.
I am also very confident and optimistic that a Guyanese by birth representing another nation or a representative of Guyana will do us proud on the track and field podium. Most importantly, I believe that Amerindians would make good long distance sports representatives of Guyana and maybe we need to start shifting our focus and see whether we can locate them and begin some nurturing and molding.
I take this humble opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to Guyanese 1980 Olympian, “Mr. Michael Anthony Parris” for his representation and achievement for the Golden Arrowhead.
You are definitely an inspiration to the sports fraternity, always be proud of yourself and being the only Guyanese Olympic medalist to date, it would be a joy to learn that corporate Guyana endorse you to represent them during their marketing campaign in someway/s.
This would definitely be an opportunity for the potential sports icons to gain motivation and inspiration for their quest.
Yours faithfully,
T. Pemberton
