A Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt man has been granted bail to the tune of $75,000 after pleading not guilty to a robbery-with-violence charge.
The accused, 28-year-old Perry Whyte, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.
Last January 7, at Kitty, Whyte allegedly robbed Ishwar Bopa of one cellular phone valued $80,000.
The court was informed that the accused has had previous matters of a similar nature before the courts.
When questioned about the veracity of this allegation, Whyte concurred, but contended that the matters were all dismissed.
Whyte is expected to make his next court appearance on March 4.
Also in the same court yesterday was a Robb Street man who was caught with a car bumper suspected to be stolen. He, too, was granted bail.
The accused, Floyd Benjamin, was charged with unlawful possession of a car bumper.
It is alleged that, on January 30, at Robb Street, Benjamin had the car bumper which was reasonably suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
He, too, pleaded not guilty, then told the court that he is a joiner, and that the bumper was given to him by someone since March last year, and was left in his yard.
He added that, on January 30, he was taking the bumper to a mechanic on Mandela Avenue to see if he was interested in it.
According to Benjamin, while he was on his way to the mechanic, he was stopped by the police, questioned and arrested.
Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that a mobile patrol stopped Benjamin on Robb Street, and since he could not give a reasonable explanation for having the bumper, he was arrested and charged.
Bail was fixed at $10,000, and Benjamin was ordered to make his next court appearance on March 5.
