To prevent diabetes-related amputations, the Ministry of Health will soon embark on a campaign to encourage Guyanese to pay closer attention to their feet.
Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has said that many persons with diabetes lose their limbs because they do not pay attention to their feet; and this, he said, is the main reason why his ministry has commenced the foot care programme in Georgetown and at the various health centres.
He explained that centres now have a screening programme to identify all foot problems. “The Georgetown Foot Care programme is a specialized programme, where they use fancy equipment to screen people and make sure that they identify all the foot problems.
The problem is that many people have these foot problems…they live with it and they do not notice it. Diabetes affects your nerves, and so your feet could be eating away and you don’t even know, because you are not feeling,” Minister Ramsammy said.
He added that the campaign will be prevalent in the newspapers, radio and television, encouraging Guyanese to take care of their feet. “You don’t have to be a diabetic to do this. The thing is we want to teach the children also.”
According to the Health Minister, the campaign is all in an effort to prevent amputations. He noted that since the foot care program has emerged and there has been greater awareness on diabetes, there has been a reduction in the number of amputations in Guyana.
Meanwhile, as it relates to the deworming programme of the ministry, it was noted that it will commence on February 28 and conclude on March 1
in Region Six.
