“I (will) go all about fuh these people! This thing got to stop!” Those are the words of a Charlestown mother, following the alleged beating of her 17-year-old son and her 14-year-old niece by a group of policemen yesterday afternoon on Broad Street, Charlestown.
The woman, Sue Ann Davis, claimed that the ranks also attempted to assault her and her sister when they tried to ascertain why her son, Rene Sheo, was being beaten.
According to Davis, her son was playing football on Broad Street and had gone into a yard to retrieve the ball when two jeep loads of policemen pulled up.
At the time, Davis’s son was clad only in a pair of trousers.
The police saw the young man running into the yard and apparently thought that he was trying to hide something. They pursued him into the yard and began assaulting him. “I hear they slapping he up and go fuh see wha happening,” Davis told this newspaper.
When Davis intervened, a police rank hurled a number of expletives at her, and she responded in kind.
That was her mistake, for the police approached her with guns pointed in an attempt to arrest the woman.
Her 14-year-old niece got involved, and one of the ranks promptly dealt her a cuff which sent her sprawling to the ground.
The teenager was picked up and dumped into the back of the police vehicle, which sped away.
The police, on their part, claimed that they were forced to adopt an aggressive approach when they were pelted with missiles from someone within the crowd.
About 15 minutes later, the police returned to the area, accompanied by two female ranks, with the intention of arresting Davis and her sister, but, instead, they detained two other women who were very vocal in their objections to the actions of the police.
This newspaper was on hand to see the police action when they returned to the area, and it was only after a little persuasion that they left the angry crowd alone.
While there, Kaieteur News heard the shattering of glass, which is believed to be from a bottle that was pelted.
Residents claim that the ranks who operate in the two vehicles that were on the scene yesterday would constantly raid the area, and although they would find nothing incriminating, they would still detain the young men.
They claimed that the police would take the youths to a location on the East Bank of Demerara, beat them with cutlasses, and then send them home.
