Mahadeo Santool, 23, of 347 Section C, Block Y, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Friday, on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, and was remanded to prison.
The defendant, who works at the MTV television station as a driver, allegedly drove a sports utility vehicle, PHH 752, on January 27 on the Agricola Public Road, causing the death of Shanice Henriques. Representing the defendant was attorney Jaya Manickchand, who said that her client is gainfully employed by MTV and is the sole bread winner for his mother and himself.
In court was the uncle of the diseased, Trevor Henriques, whom the defence lawyer showed documents pertaining to her client.
“Your Worship, my client doesn’t pose a flight risk and has been cooperating with the police ever since.”
She added that the defendant has never before been in an accident, nor has he had any other previous matter before the court.
She asked for a reasonable bail for Santool.
The magistrate refused bail, said set Santool’s next court appearance for February 3 next.
