A total of 20 under 15 cricketers drawn from several clubs across Berbice were recipients of $200,000 worth of educational and hygiene kits.
This presentation formed part of the Berbice Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) Special Events Committee (SEC) second annual Educational Awards ceremony held recently.
The clubs that benefited included West Berbice, Blairmont, Bermine, Police, Young Warriors, Rose Hall Canje, Chesney, Mental Hospital, Berbice River, Rose Hall Town, Kildonan, Whim, Scotsburg and Skeldon. Four children of Berbice Umpires also benefited.
Head of the SEC and PRO of the BCBC Hilbert Foster stated that the Berbice Board is determined that all young cricketers in Berbice must make education a goal in life. He noted that Dr. Rudi Webster, former head of the now defunct West Indies Cricket Academy, only last week disclosed that most of the academy’s members were unable to read and write. Mr. Foster told the young cricketers that education is the foundation of a successful future and allows an individual to think on their future and be calm in moments of tension.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry stated that in 2009, the BCBC would be placing great emphasis on the personal development of all of its cricketers and challenged each of the awardees to make sure they stay in school and complete their education.
President of the BCBC Keith Foster in giving the feature address stated that it would not be business as usual in Berbice Cricket as indiscipline, usage of illegal drugs and lack of commitment among others would no longer be tolerated.
All junior cricketers he stated must be attending school as education is just as important as natural talent if one is to be successful in the game.
The President disclosed that all junior cricketers in Berbice this year would be involved in personal development clinics where topics including personal hygiene, table manners, role of a sports ambassador, public speaking and public manners will be taught.
Shawn Pereira speaking on behalf of the awardees thanked the BCBC for the educational package and expressed his pleasure that the Board was placing so much emphasis on their personal development.
