All star defeated Daredevils by 7 wickets to win the Phillip Samuel 15 overs softball cricket competition played last Sunday at Belle Plaine Wakenaam.
Set 150 for victory, All star led by contrasting half centuries by Roopnarine Persaud and Abdool Salim secured victory in 14 overs for the loss of three wickets.
The pair joined forces with the score at 10-1 off 2 overs after opener Wayne Osborne was caught at midwicket for 5 off Varounie Sasepaul.
They took the score to 125 with attractive stroke play and sensible running between the wicket before Salim was eventually caught at long off for an even half century (5×4, 3×6) in the 11th over.
It then became 130 – 3 in the 12th over when All star’s captain Mustak Mohamed, who was dropped at mid off by a diving Zaheer Mohamed before he had scored, was run out for 4.
Persaud was then joined by Oyono Sampson and the pair saw their team home without further loss with an entertaining 4th wicket stand of 20 off two overs. Persaud ended unbeaten on 68 (5×6, 4×4), while Sampson, who ended the game by hitting two huge sixes in the penultimate over, was 16 not out. Sasepaul ended with figures of 2-23 off 3 overs.
Earlier Daredevils made 149 for 9 off their allotted 15 overs.
Tulsieram Ramadeen top scored with 27, while Wazir Khan supported with 24 and Imran Khan 23. Moses Ramnarine grabbed 4-18 while Gurnauth Khemraj took 2 – 22 and Salim 2-26.
In the semi-finals, All star crushed Belle Plaine 120 runs. All star batted first and piled up 221 – 3 in 15 overs. Roopnarine Persaud blasted an unbeaten 124 (10×6, 5×4) while Mustak Mohamed contributed 43 and Oyono Sampson 22.
Belle Plaine in reply were bowled out for 101 in 12 overs. Besham Bhagpattie scored 29 and Chandreka Ragnauth 24. Moses Ramnarine snared 5-14, while Vijay Persaud and Roopnarine Persaud took 2 wickets each.
And in the second semi-final, Daredevils defeated Cavaliers by 72 runs. Daredevils took first strike and made 173 all out in 14 overs with Tulsieram Ramadeen getting 40 and Varounie Sasepaul 36. Satrohan Shiwandan took 5-25 and Roopesh Singh 2-18 for Cavaliers who in reply made 101 all out in 13 overs. Adit Persaud top scored with 23 while Satnarine Sahadeo contributed 20.
Sasepaul bagged 6-13 for the Devils. All star’s Roopnarine Persaud took the man-of-the-series award, while his team collected the winning trophy and Daredevils the runner’s-up prize.
At the presentation ceremony, Phillip Samuel an overseas based Guyanese and a former member of the Sans Souci Jaguars sports club, thanked the teams for their participation and said he is pleased to be associated with cricket in Wakenaam.
