A West Bank Demerara couple is desperately searching for their 14-year-old daughter, whom they said was snatched from her school on Monday.
Missing is Ashley Melvina Sukhram.
According to her parents, Anthony Sukhram and Suzanne Zainool, the girl left their Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen home for school on Tuesday morning in the company of three other siblings. She attends the Vreed-en-Hoop Community High School.
According to her smaller sister, she had passed the school gate on Tuesday morning when she saw a man come up and grab her sister by the hand and put her on a bicycle.
She said she was afraid to tell her teacher what had happened, and she was also afraid to ask for time-off from school to go home and tell her parents what had happened. And so she told her parents what happened only in the afternoon after school.
According to the parents, they are familiar with the man who might have taken their daughter, as he was described by their younger daughter as a worker at a nearby rice mill.
Zainool said that the man had once visited their home, saying that he had no one to cook for him and wanted a place to stay, but they refused.
The couple said that after they were told of who might have taken their daughter, neighbours pointed them to where the man was living. There they found no one, but saw their daughter’s school uniform and her school bag.
They were then told that the man is married and has children. They have since met with the man’s wife, who told them that the man might have fled with their daughter to his relatives in Berbice.
The police were informed of the incident and are investigating the matter.
