‘Phantom squad’ member faces abduction charge

A man who was reportedly linked to the infamous ‘phantom squad’ is to be charged for abducting a 13-year-old girl.

A police official said that the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) made this recommendation yesterday, after perusing a report on the case.

The suspect had been arrested and charged before in connection with a high-profile murder. He was not convicted.

According to reports, the man was detained earlier this week after a 13-year-old girl alleged that he and another man abducted her last Tuesday.

This newspaper understands that the girl had previously reported that she was raped by the son of a senior police officer, and was willing to testify in court.

However, before this could happen, she was allegedly abducted by the alleged ‘phantom squad’ member, who is known to the teen’s family.

The suspect, it is alleged, then handed her over to an accomplice, who took her to Victoria, East Coast Demerara.

The teen alleged that she managed to escape, then report the matter to the police.

Kaieteur News understands that the alleged ‘phantom squad member’ was informed about the allegation, and turned up at a police station.

He reportedly denied the allegation, but was detained after the teen picked him out during an identification parade.
