Dear Editor
I write out of concern for the craftiness of an article which appeared on page 29 of your Wednesday January 28, 2009, issue under the caption: “Sporting with Sports at the University of Guyana.”
Contained in the article is the statement, “When contacted, former sports organiser Claude Blackmore acknowledged a need ……” and anyone reading the article would be led to believe that the writer had some sort of recent contact with me on the topic at caption. This is far from the truth. I ask that you ascertain from the writer when and where was this contact made.
Since leaving the University on pre-retirement leave in July 2007, I have had absolutely no contact or information with what is taking place with sports on the campus except that a new Sports Officer has been appointed and I had the privilege of meeting him two (2) Friday nights ago and for the entire period that I was at the function nothing on sports was mentioned or discussed.
I must state though that parts of the statements attributed to me in the article under review were given to the writer sometime during the 2005/2006 Academic Year when he and a female student from the Mass Communications programme interviewed me in the Sports Department for a paper/newsletter which the “Centre for Communications Studies” was attempting to produce.
UG is a microcosm of the wider society and therefore must have its fair share of problems, sports notwithstanding.
However, changes to sports at the national level require it to be made at the macro level and in a holistic manner.
Claude Blackmore
Editor’s note,
I spoke to Mr Benjamin about the article and when the interview was done, and was told it was done in the time specified in your letter.
In any case the article was one written in retrospect, but a time line maybe should have been included to give clarity.
