After being incarcerated for the last four months, Tony Ellis, 24, was finally able to secure bail in the sum of $175,000 after a stirring bail application by his attorney, Sunil Scarce, on Monday.
Granting bail was Anna Regina Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty.
Ellis, a labourer from Queenstown Village, Essequibo Coast, was charged with simple larceny.
According to a police report, it is alleged that between Monday September 8, last year, Ellis broke into the house of Michael Swam and stole household items, namely one electric drill, an electric saw, an attaché case, four speakers, a DVD player, three ware mugs, three carpenter spares, a seven-piece bowl set, one electric router, two circle saws, and four set stones.
It was also alleged that Ellis also stole US$300 from Mr. Swam.
In his application for bail, the lawyer told the court that Ellis was unable to make contact with his relatives who live in Sophia. He added that Ellis previously served a two-month sentence for an assault matter.
Also granted bail by the same magistrate, on Monday, were two young Essequibo male residents who are charged with having sex with two teenagers under the age of fifteen years.
Dwayne Marks, 17, and Ming Yee were charged separately with carnally knowing a girl under the age of fifteen. According to a police report, Marks, on Sunday last, at Dartmouth village, Essequibo Coast, allegedly approached the minor who was heading to a nearby shop and pulled her away into a nearby corner. He also allegedly proceeded to have sex with her.
The other defendant, according to reports, had known his victim and was in a relationship with her.
It is alleged that Yee had sex with the minor on several occasions. Yee was represented by Counsel Alfred Bacchus.
Marks, however, was unrepresented. Both individuals were ordered to appear on March 17, next, at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
