Faiaz Ali, 30, of 17 Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to face the charges of possession of firearm as well as possession of ammunition without being a licensed firearm holder.
On Sunday January 25, last, at Mabura, Demerara River, the defendant had in his possession one 9 mm pistol as well as 16 live 9mm rounds without being a licensed firearm holder.
Ali pleaded not guilty to both the charges.
Attorney Vic Puran, representing Ali, said that on the day in question, his client who is a ‘settled businessman’ was unfortunately, wrongfully accused, due to the fact that there were five others who were in the vehicle at the time.
“Your worship, my client wasn’t the one who was driving, but he was sitting in the front seat of the car. When the police did their search, they just assumed that since that particular vehicle was registered in his name, then he must be involved with the firearm and ammunition that was found.”
Puran, desperate to prove his client’s innocence, stated that the accused has ‘contributed substantially’ to the revenue of Guyana.
“Your worship, my client is the Chief Executive Officer of Two Brothers chain of gas stations; he is also a farmer as well as a miner.”
According to Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith, “The prosecution had no opposition to bail since there were five others, including the defendant who was in the car at the time of the discovery. The five were sent away without being charged.”
The Magistrate refused bail for the defendant; his next court appearance is set for February 3, 2009 at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court, Linden.
