NUMBER SEVENTY-TWO VILLAGE, CORENTYNE – Thirteen-year-old Bibi Haniff of Number Seventy-two Village, Corentyne, was added to road fatality statistics after she was run over by a truck, GJJ 6819.
The incident took place about 08:30 hours yesterday at the Number Seventy-two Village Public Road, Corentyne. The victim and her mother recently moved from Number Seventy-eight Village to reside with her aunt, Serojhanie Abrahim, called ‘Nallie’, at Number Seventy-two Village.
According to Serojhanie Abrahim, her home is at the corner of the street. “She mom tek she out to the road corner to get a Tapir (a motor vehicle). She see her friend and she tell her mom that she will not bother go with the Tapir, that she will go with her friend. “While going, the truck hit her. She died ‘bout three minutes later.”
Bibi Haniff was the eldest of five.
According to reports from the police in Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, the child who is a student of the Skeldon High School Annexe, accompanied by her mother, left home en route to school.
The vehicle involved is reportedly owned by H. Nauth Construction Company of Unity, East Coast of Demerara.
At the time of the incident, Mahase Paul Somai, of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, was behind the wheel of the motor lorry GJJ 6819. The company is apparently executing some road work on the Upper Corentyne.
When the accident occurred, the student of the Skeldon High School Annexe allegedly saw a friend on the eastern carriage way of the Number Seventy-two Village Public Road and was trying to get to her colleague.
The motor lorry was heading in the said direction as the child but had stopped a little way in front of her on the right side of the road.
As the driver proceeded to reverse to the left side of road, it ran over Haniff.
Bibi Haniff was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Hospital.
