Dear Editor,
Since the excessive rainfall last year, many farmers are now receiving assistance from the Government to rejuvenate their damaged farmlands as a result of floods.
Approximately $95M to $100M is budgeted for distribution to flood-affected areas countrywide. Even though this may not fully compensate for all the losses, it will however assist farmers to get back on their feet.
Teams consisting of veterinarians and officers from the Ministry of Agriculture’s Crops and Livestocks Division and the new Guyana Marketing Corporation were organised to make necessary intervention to assist those affected by the floods.
The new Guyana Marketing Corporation provided marketing avenues for farmers from Kuru Kuru, Friendship, Caneville, Canal Number Two Polder and Parika, East Bank Essequibo to sell their produce at affordable prices to consumers.
Other interventions by the Government included the distribution of plants, seeds, breeding animals, vouchers, veterinary supplies and chemicals to farmers. In addition, farmers in the Mahaica and Mahaicony areas received diesel to operate their pumps to drain the land of the excess water.
The Agriculture Ministry also announced plans to upgrade the Agriculture sector and construct a new central market for farmers. The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority continues to monitor the flood situation.
