Marc Anthony, 36, of Queenstown appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Tuesday, on a charge of simple larceny.
On Saturday January 24, 2009, he stole a quantity of lumber from Ronald James. He pleaded guilty to the charge of the offence.
When asked why he stole from the man, he said that he lives with his mother and stepfather, and didn’t know that she still needed the lumber.
‘I and me stepfather don’t really get along,’ the accused stated. “All I know is that I took five pieces of wood, but after I came out of the lock-ups I saw that two pieces were returned.”
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith said that on the day in question, the defendant was caught stealing the lumber. A security officer who was on duty at the construction site saw him and confronted him.
She said that he admitted to stealing the items and was then arrested and taken to the police station, where he was charged. Magistrate Robertson fined him $25,000 with an alternative of 12 months imprisonment.
He told the Magistrate that he didn’t have any money and said that he would prefer to stay in prison for the 12 months.
“Your worship I don’t have any money, and I in gon beg nobody. “
The defendant was then taken to prison to serve his sentence.
