STANLEYTOWN, NEW AMSTERDAM – Police in Berbice are investigating a suspected murder and are questioning a 15-year-old female of 54 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam. The victim is said to be a two-year-old sister of the person being questioned.
A source indicated that the teen told investigators a set of things, all pointing to the supernatural. Among them are that a ‘jumbie’ told her to strangle the toddler, that the ‘jumble’ told her to poison the child, and that the ‘jumbie’ also told her to do several other things to the child.
Both parents were apparently out when the incident took place. At some point during the morning the mother returned home and found the child lying lifeless.
The source said that a nurse was summoned and claimed that she felt a pulse on the child. The toddler was then rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Unconfirmed reports further suggested that the two-year-old was apparently left in the care of this sister and an older brother.
The 15-year-old and her father are in custody.
