Last Sunday, national club champions Wismar Pistons beat Amelia’s Ward Jets to hand them their first loss 59-58 in latest action in the Linden Amateur Basketball Association, Pioneer sponsored senior club championship.
In the other game Sunday, New Ballers won for the first time against Patriots 69-59.
Saturday, Glands Trucking Service Bulls also gained their first victory against Alleyene’s Retrieve Raiders 73-52 and Jets defeated New Ballers 60-40, while Pistons overcame jets.
Pistons had a 16-5 run in the third quarter to turnaround the lead established by jets in the first quarter 16-13 and at half time reached 29-25 behind the efforts of guard Nevin Grenville who had eight of his eventual 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Centre Quincy Jones had 17 points and Mark Louis 11 also for the Pistons seeking their third straight title in the 2008/9 season.
For Jets – Neil Simon had 20 points, Kevin Joseph 15, Damien Webster 9 and Akeem Kanhai 8.
New Ballers scored 64 points to defeat Patriots with 59 in the other game Sunday.
For Ballers – Gavin Fingal had 21 points, Stryon Ettienne 12 and O. Bakker 10, while for Patriots – Neil Marks 14, Julius Carter 13 and Thornton Wilson 9.
In the Bulls win over Raiders, Denzil Lovell 13, Mark Rose 13 and Kenneth Charles 10 led the winners. For Raiders, Louis James had 16, I. Joseph 14 and Devon Gittens 9.
In the Jets versus New Ballers contest which ended 60-40 in favour of the former, Akeem Kanhai 14 points, Neil Simon 11 and Delbert Kitt 9 were on target for the winners, while Ballers were led by Stryon Ettienne 12, Donnel Benjamin 10 and Elroy Dryden 8.
Competition in the tournament continues Friday with – Raiders meeting Patriots in the second game of a double header, with a supporting third division game at 6.30pm starting things off.
Sunday February 1, New Ballers oppose Bulls in the penultimate game in this first round. The other game to complete the first round is between Royals and Raiders.
The points standings to date show Pistons and Jets on 11 points, Royals on 8, Patriots on 7, Ballers and Bulls on 6 and Raiders on 5.
The other first division club Kashif and Shanghai Kings opted out of the tournament.
