Georgetown Tapeball 20/20 Champions, Cardinals’ XI again held their nerves to win an exciting two wicket victory over Fenton’s XI last Sunday at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Mandela Avenue.
An unbeaten 30 (2 x sixes, 2 x fours and 1 x five) and 3 wickets from all rounder Karranchand Indarjit and a belligerent 48 (3 sixes 5 fours) from Marcus Watkins ensured Cardinals’ XI won off the penultimate over of the 20/20 tapeball game.
On a day blessed with some light morning showers and good sunshine, Fenton’s XI won the toss and elected to bat and posted a challenging 175 for eight off the stipulated 20 overs.
Wasim Haslim heated up the scoring at the top of the order with a pulsating 51 (3 x sixes, 5 x fours), A. Griffith, K. Walker and M. Vyphuis contributed with 18 a piece. Extras contributed 26 as Cardinals’ bowlers toiled in the heat.
The experienced Indarjit bowled well and grabbed 3 vital wickets at crucial times and restricted Fenton’s XI after at one time they were 100-4 off ten overs. Rawle Munro and Jason Andrews each grabbed 2 wickets and Jason Persaud picked up the other.
After a brief interval, Cardinals’ began their run chase steadily as talented left hander Vishnu Merhai, who made 24 (3 x fours 1 x six) and Watkins joined forces to carry their team to 92 for 3 after 10 overs.
Troy Gonsalves (3 wkts) and Steve Rukhram (2 wkts) however put the brakes on the scoring and grabbed 5 quick wickets to put the pressure back on Cardinals.
The run rate required for the last six overs went to 10 runs per over as Indarjit entered the frame and started off watchfully before unleashing some telling blows. Indarjit closed proceedings with a six over midwicket on the grass lawns of the rectangular tarmac. Wicketkeeper Jermaine Fraser was also unbeaten on 8 when victory was achieved with an over to spare. Haslim, Vyphuis and Fenton each grabbed a wicket. Extras again played a vital role with a contribution of 29 runs.
