Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee has stressed the need for proper training of police ranks, since they perform multiple duties on a daily basis. These statements were made at the Conference of Inspectors and Sergeants of the Guyana Police Force, which was held last Friday.
There are numerous training courses and activities within the Guyana Police Force that encourage the ranks to undergo training such as the Junior Officers’ Course Number 18 and the Smellie Cup.
Rohee noted that “The Administration of the Guyana Police Force has been placing much more emphasis on training. I hope that you will utilize those training opportunities to ensure that you perform your duties better.”
He also highlighted that training would help the Inspectors and Sergeants deal with the changes the Guyanese society and the wider world has seen. The Minister highlighted that years ago, there was an accepted manner in which young people behaved.
Today’s youth behave in a manner which the Minister termed “inconsistent with what was accepted years ago”.
“Due to this, law enforcement agencies need to employ new strategies to deal with this new dimension in our society, said Rohee. “You as junior supervisors have to be equipped with the necessary tools to deal with the youths.”
Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, had stressed the need for members of the force to be trained in first aid and had noted at the Guyana Police Force’s First Aid Competition for the Smellie Cup last November that it was important and essential to police operations that the ranks maintained their knowledge of first aid.
He had also pointed out that knowledge of first aid was especially important since the police are usually the first ones on the scenes of crimes and accidents.
