Dear Editor,
Please allow me to offer congratulations to Chetram Singh on his return to the Guyana Cricket Board Presidency.
As someone very involved in Berbice cricket I could not help but notice that Carl Moore is the only person from Berbice on the new GCB executive and I do hope that the new GCB does not punish Berbice cricket because the Berbice Board supported Bish Panday at the elections.
Singh is indeed very experienced and I hope he sees the wisdom in involving Berbicians in some of his committees and continue to help develop cricket in Berbice despite his lack of support he got from the county’s board.
The elections are now over and let us forget the politics and start the hard work of rebuilding Guyana’s cricket.
Although I am a Berbician I hope to see the best persons put in the various positions and I humbly suggest that Albert Smith be replaced by a younger more vibrant person as coach of the national team.
We have not won a first-class title in seven years and I think it is time for Smith, who benefited from the Stanford prize money in 2006 for his long contribution to Guyana’s cricket, hand over to someone else.
I must also commend the Kaieteur News and Sean Devers in particular for its excellent and balanced coverage of the GCB elections from the campaigning period to the elections on Sunday.
I must also mention the work your sports reporters like Mr. Welch, Mr. Jefford and Mr. Wilson is doing to help promote and develop sports in Guyana with their hard hitting stories, although I urge Mr. Jefford to temper his writing just a little bit.
Keep up the good work guys and lets all hope the 2009 is a much better year for sports and particular cricket in Guyana.
