Andrew Chalmers, 28, of 9428 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with using abusive language and disturbing the peace.
It is alleged that on Sunday, the defendant, who works at R. Bassoo and Sons Construction, East Coast Demerara, directed abusive language towards Youlande Higgins.
He pleaded guilty and offered an explanation.
According to the accused, he was at Demico House, purchasing an ice-cream, when an argument broke out between himself and a cashier.
Higgins, who is the security manager of Demico House, said that he was just visiting his friends and colleagues at his work place when he was told by staff members that there was a man making trouble with a staff member.
He added that he then went to the front, where he heard for himself the man at the top of his voice, verbally abusing the cashier.
“Your Worship, this man was banging his hand on the counter, shouting and behaving badly, saying that he doesn’t have respect for no woman, because his mother died at child birth. He even told the cashier that if he was an Indian, she would treat him better.
“I confronted him about his behaviour and told him to stop, and he resisted.”
He added that a woman then called the police, who then shortly afterwards came and arrested the visibly intoxicated man. Magistrate Robertson advised the defendant that he should plead ‘not guilty’ and allow the matter to go to trial.
She asked him if he was high, when he went to buy the cone, and he answered, “Yes. I took a little shot, yeah, High wine.”
The accused was placed on $10,000 bail.
