The President, executive and members of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) has joined the rest of the cricketing fraternity and Guyana in mourning the death of former Test and First Class Umpire, Compton Vyphius.
The club describes Vyphius’ passing as sudden and unexpected and noted that he was widely respected in Guyana for his numerous achievements on the cricketing field.
Secretary / CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster said he recalled that he had spoken with the late umpire just a week ago on the telephone.
“Mr. Vyphius had called to express gratitude to the club for its annual financial grant to him and to wish the club a productive and successful 2009.”
The RHTY&SC in 2007 had honoured the outstanding cricket official under its Tribute to Heroes Programme for his service over the decades and for being a positive Role Model to others. Vyphius was inducted as an Honorary Member of the club. Significantly, he was promised a financial grant each year for as long as he lived and that was fulfilled up to the time of his passing.
Foster also disclosed that Vyphuis would call on a regular basis to offer words of advice and counsel, moments he would miss dearly.
“The club would like to call on the relevant authorities to make sure that the memory of Compton Vyphius lives on and that every umpire upholds his tradition of discipline, hard work and fairness.”
The RHTY&SC has signaled their intentions to lead in this regard by renaming its most disciplined player of the year award in Vyphius’ memory.
Vyphius officiated in six (6) Test matches, his first at the World Famous Bourda in March 22 – 27, 1974, West Indies v England. He stood in his last game four years later in Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago, April 15 – 18, West Indies v Australia.
He officiated in two (2) ODI’s, West Indies v Pakistan at Albion, March 16, 1977 and at the same venue on February 26, 1981, West Indies v England.
The club is extending sincere condolences to the family and friends of the Late Compton Vyphius. May God Bless his Soul and grant him Eternal Rest.
