Twenty-seven-year-old left-hander Guyanese Sewnarine Chattergoon has been drafted into the West Indies ‘A’ team for their match against the touring English side from February 4 in St. Kitts and will miss Guyana’s next regional first-class match against the Leeward Islands in Nevis from Friday.
Former West Indies youth team left-hander Assad Fudadin, who gets another chance to revive his first-class career, has been named as Chattergoon’s replacement and will join the national team which leaves for Nevis today.
Chattergoon, who played four Test and 18 ODIs, had a poor run with the bat in the last New Zealand series scoring just 51 runs from three innings in the Test series and 38 in four innings in the ODIs and blamed the strange conditions and cold weather for his low scores.
The talented stroke-player who became only the third Albion player to play Test cricket when he made his debut against Sri Lanka last year in Trinidad, was looking forward to getting a big score for Guyana in Nevis, where he made an unbeaten century batting with an runner the last time Guyana played there four years ago.
Not picked in the West Indies first Test squad, Chattergoon, who averages 32.76 from 55 First-class matches with four centuries, is now keen to stake a claim for a West Indies re-call with two substantial scores against the English bowlers in St Kitts.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Fudadin has been rewarded for the hard work, especially on his fitness, that he has put in during his club stint in England last year and is delighted with his belated selection.
With 805 runs from 21 first-class matches at an average of 25.96 since making his debut in 2003, the elegant Berbice batsman will be hoping to play in the final eleven and score heavily to retain his place in the squad for the next match against Barbados in Barbados when Chattergoon, Leon Johnson and fast bowler Brandon Bess will be again available for Guyana.
Fudadin, who has been very consistent at the local level and has three half-centuries in first-class cricket, represented the West Indies in World Cup finals at both under-15 and under-19 levels and is one of three First-Class players produced by Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club in Berbice.
Chattergoon’s unavailability could open the door for all-rounder Chris Barnwell to make his first-class debut and open the batting with the solid Shemroy Barrington.
Fudadin joins his Rose Hall Town team mates Esuan and Royston Crandon in the Guyana 13-man squad which is hunting their first point in the seven team tournament after losing their first two games outright.
The Guyana team read:-Travis Dowlin (Captain), Shemroy Barrington, Chris Barnwell, Narsingh Deonarine, Steven Jacobs, Hoomchand Pooran, Royston Crandon, Derwin Christian, Esuan Crandon, Veerasammy Permaul, Davendra Bishoo, Trevon Garraway, Assad Fudadin, Carl Moore (Manager), Albert Smith (Coach).
