The fight for this year’s Junior Sportsman of the Year award is well and truly on with Caribbean 15 years and under Singles Table Tennis champion Nigel Bryan adding his name to the list of athletes who’ve registered some impressive performances during the period.
Widely regarded as one of the most talented junior table tennis player in the region, the sixteen year-old Tucville Secondary School student is a strong candidate to capture the National Sports Commission award when the selection panel meets this Friday to pick the respective winners.
The diminutive orthodox player, who begun playing in 2005 and is a graduate of the ‘Teach them Young’ Programme, an initiative of the NSC, has shown remarkable improvement since and is undoubtedly the most promising junior (Boys) player in the country.
The dedicated Bryan over the past three years has displayed the level of commitment and aptitude to his game that has made him into a very promising player and one who if he receives the right guidance and maintains his training intensity can become one of the best in the region.
He has already beaten the best in the Caribbean Championships when it was staged right here in Guyana. During the competition, Bryan grabbed gold in the 15 and under singles and doubles divisions, while he earned silver medals in the mixed doubles and 18 and under Boys Doubles categories.
During that same year, the brilliant Bryan was simply unstoppable in local competitions, picking up four titles at the National Championships including the 15 and under singles; 18 and under singles; 18 and under doubles and 21 and under singles.
His conquest of local opposition continued at the Independence tournament when he earned three more titles, winning the 15 and under singles; 18 and under singles and the 21 and under divisions.
More achievements were to follow as he once again routed his opponents in the Guyana Table Tennis Association-organised tournament, capturing titles in the 15 and under singles; 18 and under singles and the 21 and under categories.
Due to his unmatched performances, he was chosen to represent Guyana at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India where he came up against some of the best junior players in the world and Bryan managed to finish in the top 16. It was another top class performance.
He then travelled to the USA to compete in the North American Teams Table Tennis Championship in Baltimore and the gifted young player produced another sublime display to snatch gold in the Division 8 class. It was a fitting performance to end the year.
