Oswald Wayne, 24, of Lot 10 B Tucville, Georgetown, secured $60,000 bail yesterday when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a charge of larceny.
It is alleged that on Friday last the accused stole from Ullani Ali one gold chain worth $80,000. The defendant, who is a clothes vendor, pleaded not guilty.
Ali, the alleged victim, said that on the day in question, while walking in the vicinity of the Route 44 Bus Park, opposite Demico House, the defendant attacked her and attempted to grab hold of her chain. She said that he pulled at her hair from behind.
He had some difficulty, because she was fighting back.
She added that he then slapped her three times in her face before he finally got away with the gold chain. I ran after him screaming, alerting the police and everyone that was around. They caught and arrested him.
The defendant was placed on $60,000 bail, and his matter was transferred to another court for March 4, 2009.
