Dear Editor,
The dismal situation of unemployment which encompasses the world leaves many people in the abyss of despair, frustration and poverty. In this regard, many people have lost their dreams, their ambitions, and their desire for a better life.
However, this bleak and dormant situation can be changed to that of a fertile and progressive one, by way of governmental policies bonded with the sole interest of the masses. In so doing, a mental revolution is needed, where the future is approached with our minds freed from preconceptions of the disastrous past.
In Guyana, the Government and the private sector can play an integral part in reducing the sad state of unemployment by way of creating more industries of growth, where the security and assurance of jobs are greatly entrenched. Industries that stimulate a negative growth will create a meaningless fluctuation of employment tantamount to hypocrisy and that of a lie.
Today it remains pellucid that, in order for any Government to embark on any scheme of employment, it should first have the confidence and trust of the masses. Such schemes must be beneficial to all, regardless of race, religion or creed.
For we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that amongst these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
In creating jobs and equal opportunities, the Government will be seen as a beacon of hope and compassion. But in undertaking such ardent tasks, it is very much imperative that proper feasibility studies be conducted; and once all the necessary elements are in train, then any international melt down will very feebly affect our glorious cause.
Today we are desperately in need of leaders with great vision and perception; leaders who have the nation’s interest in the depths of their hearts; leaders who will engage themselves in the equitable distribution of jobs, opportunities and wealth. Only then will the true meaning of democracy ring the bell of hope and prosperity to a nation as a whole. We must never accept less as a nation.
Today, as we stand in unison around the world and gaze in joy and hope, having witnessed the great eclipsed episode of the emergence of President Barack Obama, together we sigh with renewed hope and vigour.
Together we remain more prepared than ever to work together, to live together, and to build together this beautiful country of ours, Guyana — Land of the Free.
