“Chess is a very serious game and whenever a country seeks to advance the sport, it always starts in the schools,” President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Errol Tiwari told a gathering of teachers and pupils last Friday.
Tiwari, who has been the driving force behind the sport’s rebirth after many years of inactivity called on teachers to make the sacrifice to learn the game so that they can return to their respective schools and impart that knowledge to the students.
“It would be very encouraging to see teachers play the leading role in helping to get more pupils involved in the sport which as was outlined by Minister Dr. Desrey Fox has enormous benefits to the human kind, but it would also be very disappointing if the boards which were given out today (last Friday) end up in the cupboards,” he remarked.
Widely regarded as one of the best exponent of the game locally, Tiwari extended an open invitation to teachers to knock on the doors of the GCF should they encounter any difficulty in teaching the game in their schools.
“I urge you to use all the available resources to equip yourselves as you attempt to help promote the sport.”
According to Tiwari, unlike years ago when the sport was not available on the internet, teachers and students can now test their skills against opponents using that same medium, while books are also readily available now in libraries etc.
“The Ministry is planning a national schools tournament in December this year and I hope that there will be a massive turnout of students to participate in the event,” the GCF Head said.
Among the benefits that can be derived by playing the sport includes the improvement of academic thinking; the body ages less quickly that those who do not partake in the game.
Meanwhile, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony said that the Ministry is hoping that at the December tournament, they have representatives from every region in the country.
He added that the key to being a good player is to play consistently and even advised that young players will find a lot of complexities as the progress in the game, but success as in any endeavour in life only comes from hard work.
“We also would like to have more converts because of the benefits of the game and if we are going to get a Grandmaster any time soon, the best place to start is in the schools at an early age,” Dr. Anthony pointed out.
He said that many Grandmasters around the world are very young players in terms of age, adding that from all appearances they are getting younger and younger.
“I therefore call on teachers to commit some time to teach students, I know it is asking a little bit more of you, but I also know that you are genuinely interested in your pupils,” he commented.
“We will be depending on you to help spread the sport.”
The schools were then asked to be registered with the Ministry so that they can be inserted on its database and remain eligible for future assistance.
